Flaxvin develops and operates a commercial product of its own, with published pricing, a public source repository and a support obligation we carry directly. This page covers that product and its bearing on our client engagements.

Our product

Pathayam — envelope budgeting for Indian banking.

Personal budgeting software sold in India is largely imported. It assumes a card-first, statement-first market and consequently handles local conditions poorly: high daily UPI transaction volume, multiple credit cards on differing cycles, and bank statements secured with PAN-derived passwords.

Pathayam is built for that. Every rupee that arrives is assigned to a job before it is spent, so the month is decided in advance rather than reconstructed afterwards. Spending on a card immediately reserves the cash to clear it. Statement PDFs from eleven Indian banks — password-protected ones included — are parsed into a review queue where a person approves every row before it posts.

The name is Malayalam — പത്തായം — the wooden chest that held a Kerala household’s harvest, filled once and drawn from deliberately.

Why we built it

Rationale for developing it.

An unaddressed technical problem

Indian banking is a genuinely awkward data-integration problem — inconsistent statement formats, password-protected PDFs, UPI volume, no clean API surface. No available product addressed it while allowing the user to retain custody of their own data.

Accountability for our own decisions

Operating a product obliges us to live with our own decisions well beyond the invoice: our migrations, our defect reports, our incident response. Standards applied only to other organisations’ codebases tend to erode; ours are not permitted to.

Independently verifiable evidence

Client work is largely subject to non-disclosure. Pathayam is not. The source and the test suite are public, and the engineering can be assessed before any agreement is entered into.

How it is sold

What it means for your project

Application to client engagements.

Practices established by the product

  • Dependency restraint: every package added is a package to be maintained indefinitely
  • Import pipelines that never post unreviewed data
  • Reconciling parsed figures against the source’s own totals
  • Migrations and exports designed for the day a user leaves

Corresponding client capability

  • Financial and statement-parsing work we have already shipped once
  • Self-hosted and data-residency-sensitive builds
  • Products that must be exportable and handed over cleanly
  • Test discipline on codebases meant to outlive the engagement

Pathayam is also the reason our fintech and self-hosting work does not start from zero — see Industries for the sectors that benefits, and Work for client projects.

Commissioning comparable work.

Pathayam represents our work where the client is ourselves. To commission a product built to the same standard — owned by you, fully exportable and capable of being handed over — provide us with the requirements.
